When God Seems Absent: A Sermon Series on the Story of Joseph

Most of us have lived through chapters of our lives where God seemed nowhere to be found. Seasons of waiting that did not end. Relationships that fell apart and never came back together. Years of doing the right thing without the right thing ever working out. We don't always say it out loud, but the question is always there: where was God in that?

The story of Joseph in Genesis 37–50 is the Bible's longest sustained answer to that question. A favored son is sold by his own brothers. He's framed by his master's wife and thrown into an Egyptian prison. He helps a fellow prisoner who promptly forgets him. Years pass. And then, suddenly, the door of the prison opens — and what looked for thirteen chapters like waste turns out to have been preparation for the saving of many lives.

Across nine Sundays, Oaks Church in Cottage Grove will preach through the story of Joseph in a series called When God Seems Absent. Each week walks one chapter of the narrative — the family fracture, the integrity under pressure, the dungeon, the elevation, the long reckoning with buried guilt, the substitution, the reconciliation, the journey to Egypt, and finally the line that has been the silent thesis of the whole story: "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good" (Gen. 50:20).

The series is for anyone who has wondered if God noticed. Whether you have been a Christian for forty years, are exploring faith for the first time, or stepped away from church and aren't sure why you are reading this, the series is for you. There are no easy answers in Joseph's story, and we won't pretend there are. But there is a God who is at work where he seems most absent, and a rescue that is already further along than we can see.

Oaks Church is a young church in Cottage Grove — sent out last fall from Five Oaks Church in Woodbury. We're new, we're growing, and we'd love to have you with us.

Come honest. Bring a friend.
